In India The sikh festivals are celebrated as Gurupurabs. Gurupurabs are the birthdays of the first and the last gurus and these are celebrated with devotion and dedication. It is also known as ` Guru Nanak Jayanti `, the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak who founded the Sikh faith.On the full moon of Kartik, the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak is celebrated by the devotees with immense devotion. Two days before the day of Gurupurab a non-stop reading of the Adi Granth starts and religious congregations are held and hymns from the Granth Sahib are chanted.
A special open lunch(Lunger), for anyone who is hungry, is arranged at gurudwaras. The food is served with a spirit of seva (service) and bhakti (devotion).
Guru Nanak's birthday falls in the Indian month of Kartik (October/November). Sikhs believe that Guru Nanak brought enlightenment to the world. So, the festival is also called Prakash Utsav, or the festival of light. |
